Abstract

Aspects of the present invention provide methods and apparatus for forming composite components having a fillet joint. A first aspect of the invention provides a mould 102 for a composite component 108 having a fillet joint, the mould 102 comprising a mould body 105 having a cavity 116 within which the component 108 is formed, and an insert 150 mating with the mould body 105 and comprising a forming surface 160 against which, in use, the fillet of the component fillet joint is formed. The insert may be thermally insulating and highly rigid. Another aspect of the present invention provides a method of forming a composite component 108 having a fillet joint using a mould, the method comprising forcing a surface 112 of the fillet region 110 of the component to adopt a non constant radius of curvature while the component is inside the mould during the cure process. A further aspect of the present invention provides a method of forming a composite component 108 having a fillet joint that is defined between first and second legs 104, 106, the method comprising placing the legs of the component in bending during cure of the component.
