Abstract

According to an aspect, a method of operating a communication network is provided, the communication network comprising a data source and a data sink which are connected with each other via a communication network path. The method comprises storing data packets (payload data packets) of a first data packet stream in a buffer of the data source. The stored data packets are subjected to a Forward Error Correction, FEC, process, including converting the first data packet stream into a second data packet stream comprising data packets of the first data packet stream and FEC packets, wherein a number of data packets of the first data packet stream based on which a FEC packet is calculated is variable. The second data packet stream is transmitted from the data source to the data sink. When a data packet of the first data packet stream is involved in the FEC process for a period of time which exceeds a predetermined first time threshold value, the data packet is dismissed for generating data packets of the second data packet stream and deleted from the buffer.
