Abstract

The present invention relates to a ammonium polyphosphate of formula (NH 4 PO 3 ) n with n ¥ 100 in the crystal phase II coated with silica or alumina, its use in intumescent compositions and to intumescent compositions comprising it. The invention also relates to a method for coating ammonium polyphosphate with silica or alumina comprising the steps of: providing ammonium polyphosphate particles, mixing them with a suspension of colloidal silica or of alumina powder, and kneading the mixture while evaporating the water thereby providing the coated ammonium polyphosphate.
