Abstract

A hydraulic transmission comprising a variable displacement pump and motor, at least one of which has cylinders having valves which are controllable on each cycle of cylinder working volume to determine the net displacement of working fluid by the cylinder. The transmission has a controller which determines a displacement of the pump and the motor. The displacement of the pump and/or motor is controlled to attenuate oscillations in parameters such as the pump torque or the pressure in the high pressure working fluid line connecting the pump to the motor. A demand signal, such as a torque demand signal is processed taking into account a damping signal which is calculated to compensate for variations in the amplitude and phase of the response of the net displacement by said cylinders to the received demand signal with the frequency of the one or more oscillations and the speed of rotation of the rotatable shaft of the pump or motor respectively.
