Abstract

A blending appliance (10A) includes a housing (12A) with a jar receiving area (16A) defined between an upper housing (402) and a support base (22A). A blender jar (24A) includes a base portion (62C) and a receptacle portion (24C), and is configured to be laterally received within the jar receiving area (16A) of the housing (12A). A magnetic coupling system (700C) includes an upper magnetic (702C) coupler disposed in the base portion (62C) of the blender jar (24A) and a lower magnetic coupler (704C) disposed in the support base (22A) of the housing (12A). The upper and lower magnetic couplers (702C, 704C) are magnetically coupled to one another for driving a blade assembly (716) disposed in the receptacle portion (24C) of the blender jar (24A). A brake mechanism (808, 830) is disposed on the upper magnetic coupler (702C) and is configured to stop rotation of the upper magnetic coupler (702C) when the blender jar (24A) is removed from the jar receiving area (16A).
