Abstract

A planting unit (14) for a seeding machine (10) comprising: a seed meter (24) having a metering member (100) that moves seed (152) individually and sequentially along a first path to a release position (164) at which the seed (152) is moving in a first direction; a delivery system (400) receiving the seed (152) from the metering member (100) at the release position (164) and moving the seed (152) to a discharge location (413), the delivery system (400) having a brush belt (424) with flexible bristles (428) that carry the seed (152) in the bristles (428) to the discharge location (413), the delivery system (400), at the release position (164), moving seed (152) in a second direction along a second path. In order to improve the hand-off of seed from the seed meter to the delivery system the planting unit (14) further comprising a blocking member (162, 162a) having a blocking face (1400) adjacent the first path to prevent movement of the seed (152) in the second direction until the seed has passed the blocking face (1400), a first portion of the bristles (428) contacting the blocking face (1400) and being deflected thereby, the blocking member (1400) having a transition surface (1410) along the second direction to allow the deflected bristles (428) to return gradually to an un-deflected configuration as the deflected bristles (428) travel in the second direction away from the blocking face (1400).
