Abstract

An exterior light unit (2) for an aircraft or other vehicle, such as a road vehicle, ship or rail car, has an LED (4) in operation emitting light; a reflector (6), which reflects a first portion of the light emitted by the LED (4); a first lens (10), through which the first portion of the light is refracted after being reflected by the reflector (6); and a second lens (8), which is an aspherical collimating lens and which is arranged in such a way with respect to the LED (4) that a second portion of the light emitted by the LED (4) has an unobstructed path to the second lens (8) and is collimated by the second lens (8) in a main light output plane (16). The second portion of the light, when on its way from the LED (4) to the second lens, crosses way with the first portion of the light, when on its way from the reflector (6) to the first lens (10).
