Abstract

The present invention is provided for maintaining image quality in a configuration in which a lubricant is coated on a developing roller. An image forming apparatus detachably includes a process cartridge (1) including an image bearing member (10) and a developer bearing member (31) that bears developer. A lubricant of a polarity opposite to a polarity of the developer is coated on the developer bearing member (31). When the process cartridge (1) is new, a discharging operation of discharging the lubricant from a surface of the developer bearing member (31) onto the image bearing member (10) is performed.
