Abstract

A method (500) of operating a planting machine (110) and a planting machine is described. The planting machine (110) having a seed meter (124) with a housing (130) forming an interior space for a seed pool (160) and a metering member (146), the metering member (146) being operable to meter seed from the seed pool (160) and deliver metered seed for discharge from the housing (130). The method (500) comprising: filling (502) the seed pool (160) with first-type seed; operating (510) the metering member (146) to meter the first-type seed from the seed pool (160); evacuating (514), at least in part, the first-type seed from the seed pool (160) into a first-type temporary storage chamber; filling (526) the seed pool (160) with second-type seed; operating (530) the metering member (146) to meter the second-type seed from the seed pool (160); evacuating (534), at least in part, the second-type seed from the seed pool (160) into a second-type temporary storage chamber; refilling (538) the seed pool (160) with the first-type seed drawn from, at least in part, the first-type temporary storage chamber; operating (542) the metering member (146) to meter the first-type seed from the seed pool (160); and while operating (542) the metering member (146) to meter the first-type seed after refilling (538) the seed pool (160) with the first-type seed, replenishing (546) the seed pool (160) with first-type seed drawn from a bulk storage container (113) of first-type seed, the bulk storage container (113) being separate from the first-type temporary storage chamber.
