Abstract

A ram air turbine (100) is presented that includes a turbine (102) having a blade (104) and a turbine shaft (126), a strut (110) removably coupled to the turbine (102), wherein the strut (110) has a gearbox section (116) and a drive section (112), a turbine shaft (126) with a bevel gear (128) oriented perpendicularly to the turbine shaft (126) and positioned within the gearbox section (116) of the strut (110), a driveshaft (134) coupled to the generator (140) and positioned within the drive section (112) of the strut (110), and a pinion gear (132) that engages with the bevel gear (128), wherein the pinion gear (132) is secured to the driveshaft (134) by a spanner nut, wherein the pinion gear (132) utilizes a key (160) configured to interact with the keyed joint (164) of the driveshaft (134). The pinion gear (132) is supported by a pinion bearing (136) that may be press fit onto the pinion gear (132) and by one of a plurality of generator bearings (198).
