Abstract

A particulate filter (23) for trapping particulate matter contained in exhaust gas is arranged in an engine exhaust passage. The particulate filter is provided with alternately arranged exhaust gas inflow and outflow passages, porous partition walls (72) which separate these inflow and outflow passages from each other, a layer of an NO X selective reduction catalyst (81) with a ratio of passage of particulate matter higher than a predetermined first ratio of passage, and a layer of an oxidation catalyst (80) with a ratio of passage of particulate matter lower than the first ratio of passage. On the surfaces (72i) of the partition walls (72) at the exhaust gas inflow passage (71i) sides, the layer of the oxidation catalyst (80) is arranged at the downstream side in the flow direction of exhaust gas from the inflow passages through the partition walls (72) to the outflow passages and the layer the an NO X selective reduction catalyst (81) is arranged at the upstream side.
