Abstract

A gearbox 14 adapted for use with a gas turbine engine 10 and a method for making the same are disclosed herein. The gearbox 14 comprising a housing 22 made from a magnesium alloy, and an aluminum oxide coating 26 on the magnesium alloy housing 22. The aluminum oxide coating 26 may inhibit corrosion of the housing 22, and may have a nano-microcrystalline structure that defines an inner region 30 bonded directly to the housing 22 and an outer region 34 spaced apart from the housing 22.
