Abstract

An exterior aircraft light (20) includes a base plate (4) and a plurality of lighting units (2) arranged on the base plate, wherein each of the plurality of lighting units (2) includes an elongated LED light source (10) for emitting light, the elongated LED light source (10) having a light emitting surface with a longitudinal extension and a transverse extension, with the longitudinal extension being greater than the transverse extension and with a projection of the longitudinal extension onto the base plate (4) defining an orientation direction of the elongated LED light source, and a collimating optical system (12) for collimating the light emitted by the elongated LED light source (10) towards a main output direction, wherein the plurality of lighting units (2) has at least a first lighting unit (2-1) and a second lighting unit (2-2), with the orientation direction of the elongated LED light source (10-1) of the first lighting unit (2-1) and the orientation direction of the elongated LED light source (10-2) of the second lighting unit (2-2) being angled with respect to each other and with the main output direction of the first lighting unit (2-1) and the main output direction of the second lighting unit (2-2) being substantially parallel.
