Abstract

In the field of DC electrical power networks there is provided a DC distance protection controller (10) for identifying a fault (60) within a protection zone (12) that extends between a first terminal (14) with which the protection controller (10) is in use operatively associated and a set point (16) along a DC power transmission conduit (18) which lies between the first terminal (14) and a second terminal (20) within a DC electrical power network (22). The protection controller (10) is programmed to: (i) periodically obtain as respective sampled pairs (38) a measured voltage value (u m ) and a measured current value (i m ) of the DC power transmission conduit (18) at the first terminal (14); (ii) isolate in respect of each sampled pair (38), a fault component voltage value (u m ) from the corresponding measured voltage value (u m ) and a fault component current value (i m ) from the corresponding measured current value (i m ) to define a respective corresponding isolated pair (40); (iii) calculate from each isolated pair (40) of fault component voltage and current values (u m , i m ) a fault component operating voltage (u op ) of the DC power transmission conduit (18) at the set point (16) along the DC power transmission conduit (18); (iv) compare a given calculated fault component operating voltage (u op ) with a historical voltage value (u h ) derived from a historical measured voltage value (u m' ) from an earlier sampled pair (38) of measured voltage and current values (u m , i m ); and (v) identify a fault (60) within the protection zone (12) when the given calculated fault component operating voltage (u op ) is greater than the historical voltage value (u m' ) with which it is compared.
