Abstract
Provided is a liquid crystal compound that can obtain a high-speed response and a sufficient contrast ratio in switching of a display device. A compound represented by formula (1) described below is utilized. In formula (1), ring A is naphthylene, phenantolylene or anthracenylene, and in the groups, at least one piece of hydrogen may be replaced by halogen, -CH 3 , -C 2 H 5 , -CF 3 , -CHF 2 , -CH 2 F, -OCF 3 , -OCHF 2 or -OCH 2 F; and X 1 , X 2 , X 3 , X 4 , X 5 , Y 1 , Y 2 , Y 3 , Y 4 and Y 5 are independently hydrogen or fluorine, but at least two or more of X 1 , X 2 , X 3 , X 4 , X 5 , Y 1 , Y 2 , Y 3 , Y 4 and Y 5 is fluorine.
