Abstract

A locking mechanism (2) comprises a base (4) comprising a pair of arms (6, 8) projecting therefrom and defining an open mouthed recess (28) for receiving a member (24) to be selectively retained in the recess (28). The mechanism further comprises a pair of locking elements (10, 12) mounted between said pair of arms (6, 8) for rotational movement between a retracted position in which they permit access to the recess (28) and an extended position in which they extend at least partially across the mouth of the recess (28). The arms (6, 8) comprise respective guides (32) to guide the movement of said locking elements (10, 12) between said retracted and extended positions. The mechanism further comprises a drive (14) for simultaneously moving the locking elements (10, 12) in opposite rotational directions. The drive (14) may comprise a drive shaft (50) having left handed and right handed threaded portions (54, 56).
