Abstract

A mud pump, comprising: a housing (33); a crosshead (54) disposed in the housing (33); a plunger piston (58) having a first end engaging the crosshead (54) and a second end including a piston rod; a seal (101), disposed about the plunger piston (58), that seals out drilling fluid in a fluid end of the mud pump; and a drain port (96) that, upon failure of the seal (101), drains leaking drilling fluid. The corresponding method of manufacturing such a mud pump is also disclosed.
