Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide a method of extracting a target object from a video comprising at least a chronological image sequence, the motion of the target object across the chronological image sequence being represented by a predefined motion model, the motion model being associated with a set of motion parameters corresponding to the motion of the target object between two images of the sequence. The method comprises selecting pairs of successive images in the chronological image sequence, each pair comprising a first image and a second image and being associated with values of the set of motion parameters and with an optical flow vector representing the displacement of the pixels between the first image and the second image of the pair of images. The method further comprises determining (319) for each selected pair of images an extraction map, each component of the extraction map corresponding to a pixel of the second image of the selected pair of images and being assigned a binary value, the extraction map for a given pair of images being determined according to the minimization of a function that depends on the values of the set of motion parameters and the optical flow vectors associated with the given pair of images and with the previous pairs of images in the chronological image sequence. In response to the verification of a termination condition, the method comprises extracting the target object from the extraction map associated with a selected pair of images.
