Abstract

A method of operating a particulate matter sensor (20) includes accumulating particulate matter (38) on the sensor (20), thereby changing resistance between electrodes (34) of the sensor (20). The sensor (20) provides a signal that varies based upon an amount of the particulate matter on the sensor (20) and includes a measurement cycle (42) that includes a deadband zone (44) in which the resistance is greater than a first predetermined value, followed by an active zone (46) in which the resistance is less than or equal to the first predetermined value, followed by a regeneration zone (48). A first bias voltage is applied across the electrodes (34) during the deadband zone (44) and a second bias voltage which is less than the first bias voltage is applied across the electrodes (34) during the active zone (46). An output that is representative of the amount of the particulate matter is calculated after an end of the deadband zone (44) is reached and prior to an end of the measurement cycle (42).
