Abstract
A method (64) of operating a particulate matter sensor (20) having a pair of spaced apart electrodes (34) and a heater (26) includes accumulating particulate matter on the sensor (20), thereby changing resistance between the pair of spaced apart electrodes (34). The particulate matter sensor (20) includes a sensing cycle (42) that includes a deadband zone (44), followed by an active zone (46), which is followed by a regeneration zone (48) in which the heater (26) is operated to elevate the temperature of the particulate matter sensor (20) to a first predetermined temperature for a first predetermined time in order to oxidize the particulate matter accumulated on the particulate matter sensor (20). The method (64) also includes interrupting the sensing cycle (42) with a modified regeneration zone (48m) which is either higher in temperature or length than the regeneration zone (48).
