Abstract

A belt (16) for an elevator system (10) includes a plurality of tension members (24) arranged along a belt width (26) and extending longitudinally along a length of the belt (16) and a jacket (28) at least partially enclosing the plurality of tension members (24). The jacket (28) defining a traction side (30) of the belt (16) configured to interface with a traction sheave (52) of an elevator system (10). The jacket (28) includes a base material layer (46), and a coating layer (48) positioned over the base material layer (46) formed from a self-extinguishing fluoroelastomer material. A method of forming a belt (16) for an elevator system (10) includes forming a plurality of tension members (24) and encapsulating the plurality of tension members (24) in a jacket (28). The jacket (28) includes a base material layer (46) and a coating layer (48) formed from the self-extinguishing fluoroelastomer material.
