Abstract

A belt (16) for suspending and/or driving an elevator car (12) including a plurality of tension elements (32) extending longitudinally along a length of the belt (16), and a plurality of yarns (60) interlaced with the plurality of tension elements (32) forming a composite belt (16) structure. The plurality of yarns (60) are formed from a self-extinguishing fluoroelastomer material. An elevator system (10) includes a hoistway (14), an elevator car (12) positioned in the hoistway (14) and movable therein, a belt (16) operably connected to the elevator car (12) to suspend and/or drive the elevator car (12) along the hoistway (14). The belt (16) includes a plurality of tension elements (32) extending longitudinally along a length of the belt (16) and a plurality of yarns (60) interlaced with the plurality of tension elements (32) forming a composite belt (16) structure. The plurality of yarns (60) are formed from a self-extinguishing fluoroelastomer material.
