Abstract

An additive manufacturing system (20) includes a build plate (22); a deposition system (24) operable to dispense material as a melt pool (M) to grow a workpiece (W) on the build plate (22); a sensor system (28) operable to determine a temperature of the workpiece (W) being grown on the build plate (22) adjacent to the melt pool (M); and a heater system (26) operable to selectively heat the workpiece (W) between the melt pool (M) and the build plate (22).
