Abstract

A hybrid power system (88) for a vertical takeoff and landing ("VTOL") aircraft (10) including a first power source (68) operable to provide a power output for at least a forward flight mode; and a second power source (90) configured to provide a high specific power output for an altitude adjustment flight mode, the second power source (90) including an auxiliary gas generator (92) coupled to a turbine (96) and a drive system (16). In other aspects, there is provided a VTOL aircraft and methods for providing power to a VTOL aircraft.
