Abstract

A plug (10) for sealing a passage (12) extending about a longitudinal axis (A) comprises a shell (14) having a circumferential wall (16) extending between an end wall (18) and an opening (20), and an internal cavity (22) extending axially within the shell (14), and an expander (24) having a head (26) and a shank (28) extending axially from the head (26), the head (26) retained with the cavity (22) and the shank (28) extending axially through the opening (20) of the cavity (22), wherein the circumferential wall (16) comprises an inner surface (34) having at least a first region (32) and a second region (36), the second region (36) proximate the opening (20) and the first region (32) adjacent to the second region (36) and extending therefrom towards the end wall (18), the inner surface (34) in the first region (32) tapering inwardly relative to the longitudinal axis (A) to provide a first angled ramp (38), and the inner surface (34) in the second region (36) tapering further inwardly to provide a second angled ramp (42), the expander (24) being operable to urge the circumferential wall (16) of the shell (14) outwardly as it moves along the inner surface (34) in the first region (32).
