Abstract
A method 100 for making a glass ribbon 30b that includes: flowing a glass 30 into a caster 20 having a width (W<sub>cast</sub>) from about 100 mm to about 5 m and a thickness (t) from about 1 mm to about 500 mm to form an a cast glass 30a; cooling the cast glass 30a in the caster 20 to a viscosity of at least 10<sup>7</sup>Pa·s (10<sup>8</sup>Poise); conveying the cast glass 30a from the caster20; drawing the cast glass 30a, the drawing comprising heating the cast glass 30a to an average viscosity of less than 10<sup>6</sup>Pa·s (10<sup>7</sup>Poise) and drawing the cast glass 30a into a glass ribbon 30bhaving a width (W<sub>ribbon</sub>) that is less thanW<sub>cast</sub>; and thereafter cooling the glass ribbon 30b to ambient temperature. Further, the cast glass 30a during the cooling, conveying and drawing steps is about 50 °C or higher.
