Abstract
This application describes methods and apparatus for voltage control, in particular, of an energy storage element (103) of a cell (200) or sub-module of a voltage source converter (400). The cell (200) is operable in a first switch state, with negative and positive terminals of the energy storage element connected to a first (101) and second (102) cell terminals respectively, and also in a second switch state in which the cell terminals (101, 102) are electrically connected in a path that bypasses the energy storage element. A discharge module (201) is connected in series between the cell terminals (101, 102) and includes a line-commutated switching element (202) which transitions from a conductive state to a non-conductive state if a current/voltage through/across the first switching element drops below a threshold. A controller (204), in response to a fault condition, controls the cell to be in the first switch state with the first element (202) in the conductive state. The controller is operable to switch to the second switch state to shut-down conduction via the discharge module.
