Abstract

A refrigeration system comprises an evaporator (10) within a chilled space, a compressor (12), and a condenser (14) which is located in an internal space, such as a plant room, separate from the chilled space, and a thermal expansion valve or metering device (16). Refrigerant output from the compressor is fed into a box (2) in which heat is exchanged in a plate heat exchanger (30) with water from a heating system (24) before being output to the condenser (14). When the refrigeration system is not running but there is still a demand for heat the refrigerant follows a different path (36) within the box: compressor to plate heat exchanger to a second plate heat exchanger (32) to second expansion device to condenser coil (which has now become the evaporator) to second heat exchanger and back to the compressor. The heat gained from the space in which the condenser coil is located makes up the COP and efficiency in heating mode.
