Abstract
Disclosed is a method of making high temperature fiber including chemically bonding high temperature material to a fiber template at a first temperature to form a precursor fiber and processing the precursor fiber at a second temperature to form the high temperature fiber. The first temperature does not equal the second temperature. Chemically bonding occurs by atomic layer deposition. Also disclosed are high temperature fibers made by the method, comprising a first region and a second region wherein the first region differs from the second region by average grain size, microstructure or a combination thereof. The first region surrounds the second region and the average grain size of the first region is less than the average grain size of the second region.
