Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for installing indexing features into a composite part, the method comprising: - laying up (302) a preform (200) onto a layup mandrel (110) defining a contour (112) for a composite part (250), as well as onto a portion of the layup mandrel that is located beyond final trim boundaries (202) of the composite part; - hardening (306) the preform into the composite part with indexing features (210) formed therein; and - demolding (310) the composite part from the layup mandrel while retaining a manufacturing excess (204) that includes the indexing features and the method further comprising: - prior to demolding (310) the part, removing (308) material from the composite part (250) while retaining the manufacturing excess (204) that includes the indexing features (210), wherein the material is a flash edge (256) of surplus material that extends beyond a manufacturing excess region (122) and defines a manufacturing excess edge (206).
