Abstract

A a polyaxial bone anchoring device is provided including an anchoring element (1) comprising a shank (2) for anchoring in bone and a head (3), a receiving part (5, 5', 5", 5'", 5"", 5000) comprising a head receiving portion (50) having a wall defining an accommodation space (52, 52', 52", 52"') for accommodating the head of the anchoring element and a central axis (C) extending through the accommodation space; and a locking member (6, 6') mountable to the receiving part such that it embraces at least partially the wall of head receiving portion and is movable between at least a first position and a second position; wherein the head receiving portion (50) is configured to assume at least a first configuration in which the head can pivot in the accommodation space when the locking member is in the first position and a second configuration in which the head is locked in the accommodation space when the locking member is in the second position; characterized in that head receiving portion (50) comprises at least one cavity (57, 57', 57", 57'") in the wall that is configured such that a thickness of the wall in a radial direction with respect to the central axis (C) between the accommodation space (52, 52', 52", 52'") and the locking member (6, 6') is reduced by the cavity.
