Abstract

A ceramic fiber preform (10) includes a plurality of ceramic fiber plies (14) arranged to define a wall (16), a void (20) adjacent the wall (16), and an insert (12) positioned within the void (20). The insert (12) includes a first region (22) having a first porosity and a second region (24) in physical contact with the first region (22) and having a second porosity. The first region (22) and second region (24) are formed from a woven ceramic material, the wall (16) has a wall porosity, and the first porosity is less than at least one of the second porosity and the wall porosity.
