Abstract

A universal isolated binary input module (500) comprises an input (101) configured to receive a DC or AC binary input voltage (V<sub>IN</sub>), an input protection (102), a rectifier (103) configured to derive a DC input voltage (V<sub>DC</sub>) from the binary input voltage, and a power supply (104) using the binary input voltage to power the binary input module. An integrated microcontroller (512) having an inbuilt ADC (514) is configured to convert the DC input voltage into N-bit digital values presenting the voltage magnitude of the binary input voltage, and to encode the N-bit digital values into a pulse position modulated (PPM) binary data stream. The integrated microcontroller is further configured to power a galvanic isolator (114) and drive the galvanic isolator with the PPM binary data stream through a serial output port (Out).
