Abstract

A bearing system is provided that includes a stationary structure (34, 36, 198), a rotating structure (48; 49; 50; 202), a magnetic-foil bearing (60) and a cooling jacket. The rotating structure (48; 49; 50; 202) is rotatable about an axis (22, 78). The magnetic-foil bearing (60) radially supports the rotating structure (48; 49; 50; 202) within the stationary structure (34, 36, 198). The magnetic-foil bearing (60) includes a magnetic bearing stator (68), a magnetic bearing rotor (72) and a foil bearing (70). The foil bearing (70) is disposed radially between the magnetic bearing stator (68) and the magnetic bearing rotor (72). The cooling jacket (216) circumscribes and radially engages the magnetic bearing stator (68). A cooling circuit (218) is configured to flow cooling fluid within the cooling jacket (216) to cool the magnetic bearing stator (68).
