Abstract
A method of manufacturing a thermoplastic component (20) involves providing a first thermoplastic body (38A) having fiber-reinforcement (44A) with a first electrical conductivity and a second thermoplastic body (38B) having fiber-reinforcement (44B) with a second electrical conductivity greater than the first. The second thermoplastic body (38B), preferably arranged between the first thermoplastic body (38A) and an induction welding coil (72), is then induction welded to the first thermoplastic body (38A). The first and second fibres may be heat-treated, coated or selected from different types of fibres to provide the different electrical conductivities. Preferably, carbon fibres with a core and shell are used. Having different electrical conductivities permits the thermoplastic bodies (38A, 38B) to be differentially heated, allowing one body (38B) to be melted more than the other. The first and second thermoplastic bodies may be an aircraft fuselage skin (38B) and aircraft structure (38A) respectively.
