Abstract

The present disclosure provides an imaging tool an opto-acoustical imaging tool, an integrated photonic ultrasound transducer (IPUT), and the use thereof the imaging of (biological) samples. The tool comprises an ultrasound emitter (10) to provide an acoustic probing wave (P) for imaging a sample (100), and an IPUT (20) comprising an optical waveguide (WG) (21) supported by a carrier (22), wherein, the WG (21) and the carrier are essentially non-resonant over a range covering a frequency of the probing wave. The IPUT (20) comprises an amplifier element (30) that is mechanically coupled to at least a part of the WG and having an exposed impingement surface (31) to receive a portion of the acoustic pressure wave, said impingement surface extends along a plane comparatively more distant from the carrier substrate than the WG, and having a plan area greater than the WG.
