A device (600) for generating a chronostratigraphic chart (520') for a given subsurface includes receiving (602) biostratigraphic data (210) including taxon names (211), standardizing (604) the taxon names (211) in the biostratigraphic data (210) to obtain standardized taxon names, generating (606) species biostratigraphic events (328) from the standardized taxon names by estimating an abundance of each species in the biostratigraphic data (210) with respect to a sample depth, assigning (608) ages (332) to the species biostratigraphic events (328), and generating (608) the chronostratigraphic chart (520') based on the species biostratigraphic events (328) and the assigned ages (332).
