Abstract

Example embodiments relate to passive optical networks (PONs) and in particular to the communicating of registration identifiers associated with peripheral communication units which may be used as part of an activation procedure. For example, one example embodiment comprises an apparatus, which may comprise means for receiving, over a passive optical network and from a peripheral communication unit, a data message which include an encrypted registration identifier associated with the peripheral communication unit and wherein the registration identifier is encrypted using a public key associated with the apparatus. The apparatus may also comprise means for decrypting the data message using a private key associated with the public key to determine the registration identifier associated with the peripheral communication unit.
