Abstract
The present invention relates to a magnetic anisotropic material, in the form of magnetic elongated elements, preferably superparamagnetic nanochains, for use in the disruption of a bacterial biofilm and/or in the sensitization of bacterial colonies to antibiotic treatment, the non-therapeutical use of said magnetic anisotropic material for disrupting a bacterial biofilm and/or sensitizing bacterial colonies present on a surface, on and/or within a medical device, in pipes, in conducts, and/or in a liquid, a biofilm disrupting and/or sensitizing composition comprising said magnetic anisotropic material and at least one antibacterial agent, said biofilm disrupting and/or sensitizing composition for use in the treatment of a bacterial infection or infestation involving biofilm formation, the non-therapeutical use of said composition as an anti-infective agent, preferably for the disinfection of a surface, a medical device, pipes, and/or conducts, or for purification of a liquid, and an in vitro or ex vivo method for disrupting a bacterial biofilm and/or sensitizing bacterial colonies to antibiotic treatment, wherein it comprises a step of applying an oscillating or rotating magnetic field to a magnetic anisotropic material.
