Abstract

The invention is in the field of fatty acid production. Provided is a process for the production of a branched saturated fatty acid, comprising the steps of: a) providing a reactant mixture comprising one or more branched unsaturated fatty acids and one or more fatty acid lactones, b) contacting the reactant mixture with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and an acid catalyst; wherein the acid catalyst comprises zeotype material having: - an external surface area of 100 m<2>/g or more, measured using Ar-physisorption, and - acid sites of intermediate strength and acid sites of low strength determined using temperature-programmed desorption of NH<3> at temperatures of 250-400 °C and 100-250 °C, respectively, wherein the ratio (acid sites of intermediate strength) : (acid sites of low strength) is 0.9 or more.
