Abstract

A mobile wheeled device, such as a hospital bed, comprises a base with a number of undriven wheels and a wheel driven by an electric motor (51), a sensor arrangement (65) for detecting a signal indicative of a force acting on the mobile wheeled device, and a controller (64) configured to drive the electric motor (51) in dependence on the signal detected by the sensor arrangement (65). The electric motor is incorporated into a wheel hub of the driven wheel. The sensor arrangement is arranged at the driven wheel and comprises a rotary encoder (56, 59) in the wheel hub. The sensor arrangement measures an angular acceleration of the driven wheel as the signal indicative of a force acting on the mobile wheeled device. The controller (64) is arranged at the driven wheel and controls a drive current to the electric motor in dependence of the measured angular acceleration.
