Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for producing a syngas mixture, comprising: removing CO<sub>2</sub> from air by exposing the air to a carbon depleted alkaline catholyte capturing solution, thereby obtaining a carbon enriched catholyte capturing solution comprising HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>; feeding the carbon enriched catholyte capturing solution comprising HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> to a catholyte compartment of an electrolyser which further comprises an anolyte compartment comprising an anolyte solution and a middle layer compartment provided between the catholyte compartment and the anolyte compartment and comprising a middle layer solution; electrolysing a first portion of the HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>, thereby forming a syngas mixture, and electrolysing the anolyte solution to produce protons (H<sup>+</sup>); migrating a second portion of the HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> from the catholyte compartment to the middle layer compartment, and migrating protons from the anolyte compartment to the middle layer compartment; acidifying the migrated HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> with the protons, thereby forming CO<sub>2</sub>. The invention further relates to a system for performing such a method.
