Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of determining a position of a workpiece (12) relative to a laser beam (14) of a laser processing tool (10), wherein the workpiece (12) is to be processed by the laser beam (14). The laser processing tool (10) comprises a supporting member (16) configured for supporting the workpiece (12), a laser beam generator (18) configured for generating the laser beam (14), a scanning device (24) configured for displacing at least one of the laser beam (14) and the supporting member (16) so as to scan the laser beam (14) over the workpiece (12), and at least one optical detector (32) arranged in a predefined position relative to the laser beam (14) and configured to detect electromagnetic radiation coming from locations on the workpiece (12), where the laser beam (14) impinges on the workpiece (12). The workpiece (12) comprises a structure having a predefined position on the workpiece (12) and being configured to be detectable by the at least one optical detector (32) based on a change of at least one characteristic of said detected electromagnetic radiation when the laser beam (14) passes across the structure. The method comprises the steps of scanning the laser beam (14) over the workpiece (12) by means of the scanning device (24) and, during said scanning, obtaining displacement coordinates indicative of a relative displacement between the laser beam (14) and the supporting member (16), synchronously with the scanning, collecting output data from the at least one optical detector (32) to obtain registered data comprising the displacement coordinates and the output data registered to each other, determining the position of the structure of the workpiece (12) relative to the displacement coordinates from an analysis of the registered data, and determining the position of the workpiece (12) relative to the laser beam (14) based on the determined position of the structure relative to the displacement coordinates. The invention further relates to a corresponding apparatus for carrying out the method and a laser processing tool.
