Abstract
Provided is a terbium-including paramagnetic garnet-type transparent ceramic in which a maximum change amount of an incident laser beam diameter can be kept to 10% or less even in a case in which incidence power of laser light having a wavelength of 1064 nm and a beam diameter of 1.6 mm is increased to 160 W. The terbium-including paramagnetic garnet-type transparent ceramic includes a sintered body of a composite oxide represented by Formula (1): (Tb<1-x-y>Y<x>Sc<y>)<3>(Al<1-z>Sc<z>)<5>O<12> (1) (0.35 ≤ x ≤ 0.45, 0 < y < 0.03, 0.5 < 1-x-y < 0.65, 0.001 < z < 0.03, and 0 < y + z < 0.06), and has a total light transmittance of 84.8% or more at a wavelength of 600 nm. A magneto-optical element is an optical isolator that includes the transparent ceramic as a Faraday rotator 110, includes a polarizer 120 and an analyzer 130 on a front and back side of an optical axis 102 of the Faraday rotator, and is usable in a wavelength band of 0.9 µm or greater and 1.1 µm or less.
