Abstract
The invention relates to a whole-blood compatible matrix for coupling a ligand and use in extracorporeal blood treatment, comprising a solid substrate having bound thereon polyethylene glycol (PEG), wherein the solid substrate comprises particles, wherein said particles have: a diameter of about 100 µm to about 1000 µm and an average pore size of about 20 nm to about 300 nm, the polyethylene glycol has a molecular weight of about 500 - 7000 Daltons, and wherein the polyethylene glycol comprises a terminal functional group for coupling the ligand to said polyethylene glycol, and wherein the polyethylene glycol is liner, Y-shaped, or branched. The invention further relates to a blood treatment device in the form of an adsorption cartridge or column, comprising the matrix according to the present invention. The invention further relates to a ligand coupled to the polyethylene glycol of the matrix according to the invention for use in the treatment of a medical condition by extracorporeal blood treatment.
