Abstract
A method for making a masterbatch material comprising a surface-modified silica and rubber latex is disclosed. The method comprises admixing the surface-modified silica with water and ultrasonicating the surface-modified silica and water to produce a silica solution; admixing the silica solution with the rubber latex to obtain a second solution; and removing water from the second solution to obtain a masterbatch material. The surface-modified silica comprises fewer surface-exposed hydrogen bonding groups than an otherwise identical unmodified silica. Also disclosed is such a masterbatch material and its use in a cured or uncured rubber composition for use in an article or tire.
