Abstract

Systems, methods, and instrumentalities for constructing an energy aware bitrate ladder. An example device may obtain an indication of a quality metric that represents a trade-off between content features and a parameter associated with energy consumption. The device may determine, based on the quality metric, a plurality of quality metric values associated with a plurality of resolutions. The device may determine, based on the plurality of quality metric values, an acceptable set of resolutions from the plurality of resolutions. The device may determine, based on quality metric values associated with the acceptable set of resolutions, a plurality of energy reduction rates associated with the acceptable set of resolutions. The device may select, from the acceptable set of resolutions, a smallest resolution with an energy reduction rate that is less than a maximum energy reduction rate and assign that resolution to a bitrate.
