Abstract
Systems (10) and methods (100) for determining airway impedance of a patient undergoing mechanical ventilation are disclosed. A controller (22) including one or more electronic processors (30) is configured to: receive (104) an apparent airway impedance of a patient measured during an impedance estimation procedure by a mechanical ventilator (14); determine (106) at least one cheek metric based on data received from at least one cheek sensor (24a, 24b, 24c) associated with the patient; determine (108) a cheek impedance based on the at least one cheek metric; and determine (110) a true airway impedance based on the apparent airway impedance and the cheek impedance.
