Abstract

Disclosed is a method of selecting an optimal central processing unit (CPU) core for a computer system to use to execute a specific software task, where the computer system has a plurality of CPU cores. The method includes steps of: receiving, from an operating system, O/S, of the computer system, a request to select a CPU core from amongst the plurality of CPU cores for use in executing a specific software task; and selecting a CPU core from amongst the plurality of CPU cores for use in executing the specific software task, in response to the request from the O/S, and sending the selected CPU core identity to the O/S; the plurality of CPU cores may concurrently be executing a plurality of software tasks, each having a respective plurality of execution states, the plurality of CPU cores is organized in a dynamic hierarchical tree-based structure which dynamically changes.
