Abstract
The present disclosure provides concepts for monitoring a medical instrument comprising an elongate device and an actuator configured to control movement of the elongate device. In particular, device data indicating a shape and/or position of at least a portion of the elongate device, and actuator data indicating a target shape and/or position of at least the portion of the elongate device, are leveraged to monitor tension of the elongate device. The device data and actuator data are processed with a tension prediction algorithm to generate a predicted tension value describing a degree of resistance against movement experienced by the elongate device. This allows for real-time automatic monitoring of tension in the elongate device during medical procedures, enabling early detection of potentially dangerous situations and improving patient safety.
